Rush - The Pass
BackRush music video and lyrics
Words by Neil Peart, music by Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson
Proud swagger out of the schoolyard
Waiting for the worlds applause
Rebel without a conscience
Martyr without a cause
Static on your frequency
Electrical storm in your veins
Raging at unreachable glory
Straining at invisible chains
And now youre trembling on a rocky ledge
Staring down into a heartless sea
Cant face life on a razors edge
Nothings what you thought it would be
All of us get lost in the darkness
Dreamers learn to steer by the stars
All of us do time in the gutter
Dreamers turn to look at the cars
Turn around and turn around and turn around
Turn around and walk the razors edge
Dont turn your back
And slam the door on me
Its not as if this barricade
Blocks the only road
Its not as if youre all alone
In wanting to explode
Someone set a bad example
Made surrender seem all right
The act of a noble warrior
Who lost the will to fight
And now youre trembling on a rocky ledge
Staring down into a heartless sea
Done with life on a razors edge
Nothings what you thought it would be
No hero in your tragedy
No daring in your escape
No salutes for your surrender
Nothing noble in your fate
Christ, what have you done?

There are great bands, and then there is Rush. Out of range...out of reach. Singularly, music with a mind...not just a soul.

This video actually conjures the opposite emotion you would think. Right after the first time I heard this I got an email from someone really special to me saying that they got of the hospital where they were for suicide watch.

every single rush song is just mind blowing?!?! you have to put them up there with zeppelin and the beatles, imo they are the trifecta of best bands ever RUSH ON TOP

I have listened to this song countless times and still moves me every single time I play it it's just craftsman's work, despite the serious subject, one of these immortal songs...

What amazes me is that this is a song about suicide, yet it's so beautiful. This and A Tout Le Monde are the most amazing death songs I've ever heard. Obviously very different, but amazing.
Also, I don't think Rush really has a best song. Everything fits together as a part of their catalog. That's why I love their albums, especially Hold Your Fire, because they're ALBUMS, not just a few good songs with a bunch of B-Sides.

What a great song and video. The black/white imagery with the angst of the solitude I am certain connected and saved a few from the idiocy. Amen.

Normally RUSH doesn't have much of a heart. They're very clinical, and I don't care for them.
But this song blows me away. The atmospheric playing of Lifeson, the power of Peart, and the sad whine of Lee come together with the music and lyrics, and even this video, too, and just kick huge amounts of ass. I hope they got a gold medal for this.
