He converted to Christianity when he was a captain of a slave ship. He wrote the poem preparing for a sermon long after he left the slave trade and was in his 50's. At the time, he was reflecting on his life and the road that brought him to Christianity.

They played this at my grandpas funeral today going to miss him can't wait to see him again in heaven when my time comes. at lest u are not suffering anymore
