Nessun Dorma (Pavarotti, NY 1980)

Back

Luciano Pavarotti singing from a concert in January 1980 with the NY Philharmonic cond. by Zubin Mehta. Compare this performance with other (later) dates; Pavarotti here is clearly still in absolute total command. This was part of the "Live from Lincoln Center" 30th anniversary special.

Very common tradition for opera singers to hold a lareg white handkerchif. probably started back in the days of no A/c and open air concerts loaded with flying insects. It ended up being one of Pavoratti's trademarks. But the traits fans loved most were his wide open arms to them at the end...and his amazing smile. The end of this video shows it really well. Comes from the soul and lights up his face and the room. Viva Luciano!

Hi John, I can try, mind you I am no expert. But Gram came from Italy & loved the Italian operas.I have been listening to these arias since I was about 5 yrs old. As many have said, re Nussun Dorma, it's really about the last 20 seconds or so. The song itself is one that builds, but in the end he is confident and bold, He will win! When Morning comes he will have victory! The last few words should be the most robust, but Corelli does not pour out that emotion level at the end. Just my opinion.

Could you please explain about corelli

May I respectfully reply? After all is said and done, isn't it really about the end result? Who makes it sound the most beautiful to our ears, and who sings it in the way that touches our hearts? I have never heard it sung by pavoratti that the room did not explode in tears and cheers. He only got better with age. This was from 1980 and I love it because of his beautiful smile, but try listening to a couple of his others here. Corelli was excellent too, but his ending was always a dissapointment
