1973 Arlington Invitational

In his first outing after winning the 1973 Triple Crown, Secretariat travels to Chicago to run in a race set up especially for him. Chris Schenkel calls the race and is joined by Penny Chenery and Lucien Laurin. The race was run June 30, 1973.

Its a special treat to hear the late Chris Schenkel give a running commentary along with Penny Chenery. Ms. Chenery sure was antsy there for awhile; of course, she needn't have been. As soon as Turcotte asked for some run out of the 'big boy' in the stretch, he got it-in spades.
I think Lucien Laurens comment that Big Reds early pace was way too slow to set a track record from says something about his incredible acceleration in the stretch. The final time was just 1/5 second off the record.

mamojica: Thanks so much for this video. I,too was there for this race. It was totally thrillig to see the absolute best horse in his prime. I still have my winning ticket.

In addition Secretariat lost the Woodward, primarily because he wasn't really intended to start. The track was muddy, Riva Ridge was the one to go in the Woodward,but Riva didn't handle mud. So without the "zinger" workout Lucien usually gave Secretariat, he was just a little dull. If he would've been pointed towards the Woodward earlier, I believe you would have seen the real "BIG RED".

For someone to say that blew his chances in the Whitney is ridiculous. Though the field had some good horses, that ended up being a payed workout. Secretariat thrived on hard work, in fact if he didn't get a brisk workout before a race he tended to be dull,that is usually the opposite with racehorses. He got beat in the Whitney,because he had a fever coming up to the race.

Bon that is why Lucien Laurin is the hall of fame trainer and you are the observer...cant question a barn that wins 5 of 6 triple crown races...i believe great mr pletcher just got his first

This is one race he shouldn't have been run in, the $150,000 purse was the temptation. He was supposed to rest before trng for wht Whitney.

I worked for the trainer of My Gallant, (Lou Goldfine) who also trained Shecky Greene the same year,what a shame to have TWO top three year olds in '73 and have to hook "a tremendous machine" on numerous occasions. Big Red was the best.
