I hope it all does work out. A large majority of city/towns afghan people support the government and coalition forces. Once they lived peaceful 20th century lives and they miss those times.
Unfortunatly once you get out of town things get more ambiguous and hard to control but i wouldnt say this is an unwinnable war. The trick is to seal the border with pakistan and the Taliban supply system will collapse.
The withdrawal from Iraq which is on the cards is going to free up a lot of troops
